Atatürk was the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. During his relatively short life (1881-1938), he led Turkish War of Independence and later transformed the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, democratic state by dramatically reforming the political and social system. Today he remains the most important figure in Turkish history.

You can visit Dolmabahçe Palace in Beşiktaş,where he lived until his death, as well as his summer home in Florya, the Atatürk Marine Mansion. Statues of Atatürk are throughout the city, perhaps the most famous being the Republic Monument at the heart of Taksim Square, which portrays all the founders of the Republic.
