Do people do fake tanning in Istanbul?

Yes, they do. Tanned skin is still a symbol of wealth I believe. If your skin is too white it probably means you are not from a family who can afford coastal or ski vacations, or solarium. I am not sure whether it is still as popular it was in late 90s, but it's not uncommon to see beauty salons that also offer "Solarium," which is artificial tanning.
